Jacobsen Now's a good time to learn to be thrilled with rejection (ok, not thrilled; just feeling good). Developing a positive view of rejection will significantly improve your success with meeting people through personal ads and the Internet. A. If you were in direct marketing (the "mail order" business), and you ran an ad that got no replies (how's that for rejection), you would figure that at least one of the following was the problem: 1. The ad was not worded in the right way to appeal to your customers. 2. You're advertising in the wrong media. 3. No one is interested in your product. A lack of response indicates that something needs work, and the logical thing (if you're convinced you have a good product and have selected the right media) is to adjust the wording of the ad. Test different approaches until you find one that works for you. (And remember, honesty in advertising pays.) One woman said that she had finally fine-tuned her ad to perfection. Each time she placed an ad she would analyze who had replied and why, and make small changes in her ad. Now she was only getting a few replies, she said, but they were all exactly the sort of people she wanted to meet. B. If you answer a particular ad and get no response, the possible reasons are endless, but the result is the same - the person is not interested in making contact and consequently has decided not to "encourage" you. This is good; why spend time on the phone or, worse yet, on dates, with someone who has already decided they are not in the market for your product. Sure, you can say, "Well, if they really got to know me, they'd like me!" and that may be true, but the other person thinks the likelihood is slim, and they are using their time to meet people who have the best odds of "working out." Which is what you should be doing. In any and all social circumstances rejection is actually a friend; it saves you from wasting time, energy and money on folks who are not really interested, and lets you put those resources into getting to know the people who are. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * LINKS TO TONS OF USEFUL INFORMATION!
