Jacobsen Asking who should pay for the first date seems like a relatively straight-forward question. We've been polling our web site readers on the topic, and like most things about relationships, there are complications. Basically, one-third of respondents said that the man should pay for the first date. Almost half (48%) said that the person who does the inviting should pay for the date. Another 15% said going Dutch was the best procedure. However, one person qualified that, saying "Dutch if the woman invites; otherwise the man pays." One split hairs a slightly different way, noting, "If it is a first meeting, I think they should split it, or the woman should offer to pay her half." Finally, there was this thought, "Being over 50, costs should be shared." (No word on what one should do at 49, though.) It's too bad we don't know the sex of our web-respondents. In past surveys we've found that both sexes favor the "who invites, pays" system, though more men support it than women. Our next Internet research question is "If you would have one question about the opposite sex answered, or mystery solved, what would it be?" Send your questions to sing-@primenet.com. ************************ Singles Site of the Week - Looking for information from, or on, the government, but dread trying to find the right site? However, don't assume that a good time to chat for you is also at a good time for the person you've called. Always start by asking if they have a few minutes to talk. If they say, "Well, just a few minutes....." then make it five minutes or so and then offer to end the conversation. If they say they don't have much time at the moment, just say, "Ok, I'll call another time." Don't pressure them for a good time to call, especially if it's early in the dating relationship. (If they offer a time, that's great, of course.) REMEMBER: It is always better to make your early phone conversations too short than too long. ************************* ALL SINGLES DANCE SCHEDULE: Oct. 20 No suitable location available October 29 Mountain Shadows, 5641 E.
