Jacobsen Your personal ad and your voice greeting should work together to ensure that everyone who is interested calls AND leaves you a message. With a little planning, the ad and greeting can be a high performance team. Your ad should tell as much about you as possible. Avoid the common tendency to emphasize what you're LOOKING FOR in the ad. Do they sell cars by saying, "Wanted: young professional type, quality conscious, not too mechanical"? No, they tell you about the CAR and let everyone who is interested show up. Same with your ad. Give the essentials: age, and an indication of height/weight. Many people skip any ad that doesn't give that information, assuming you have some terrible reason for not mentioning it. Then indicate the kind of person you are: interests are fine, values and attitudes are better. Which is more appealing: "Likes sports, movies and dining out," or "Active, artsy, optimistic and adventurous"? In your greeting, restate your ad, then give the details. If you have characteristics that you know will appeal to some and not to others, mention them: "I have two cats, I'm a nonsmoker, and pretty much a night owl." The screening process is a primary advantage of the personals, so next mention any qualities that for you are ESSENTIAL in the other person, such as religion, smoker/nonsmoker, part of town, age range, kids/no kids. Your preferred-but- not-essentials might include things like hair color, education, and favorite sports; save those for your first phone conversation. Finally in your greeting, ask the person to tell why your ad interested the m and in what ways they match or don't match you. Encourage them to share whatever they think you would find interesting about them. And remind them to include their phone number! Think of your personal ad as your "headline" and your greeting as your sales pitch. Tell a lot about yourself, and put as few restrictions as possible on who can answer. Then you can select from the replies of all those folks who are definitely interested in what YOU have to offer. ************************ Singles Site of the Week - Hey, women are the new "handy-persons" so both sexes will soon be in love with duct tape. Find out all about it at . * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Advice from Aunt Janet -- Are you SURE movies are such a great idea for dates? Ok, when you already know each other, that's fine, but movies make no sense at all for first (or first few) dates. Aren't you trying to get to know each other? You do that by TALKING (and observing each other in real settings). Liking the same movies is nice, but not really enough to build a solid relationship. Lunch dates, going to the park to feed the ducks, playing pool, strolling through a museum -- such things create opportunities to get acquainted. Don't waste valuable getting-to-know-you time at the movies. ************************* ALL SINGLES DANCE SCHEDULE: September 29 Mountain Shadows, 5641 E.
