Jacobsen Holiday season can be an especially exciting time for meeting new people and for dating, if you stay in tune with the special needs of the season. 1. Assume people have less free time than usual, unless they tell you otherwise. When planning a first date, let them know you expect just a short time - half an hour or so for a coffee date is best. 2. When planning subsequent dates, take advantage of what the season has to offer. See a special light display, attend a holiday concert. 3. Window shopping can be a fun date in a wonderfully decorated shop or mall, provided you don't wind up feeling pressured to buy each other gifts. For a window shopping date, plan a stop for coffee or dessert after the mall walk; the time in the restaurant comes to an easier end than calling a halt to wandering the stores. 4. Be cautious in your gift giving if the relationship is just getting started. Avoid anything that might be construed as too "intimate," but also stay away from the essentially meaningless, such as plastic statues with slogans like, "You're cute." Calendars (if the theme is appropriate for the person) can be a thoughtful gift. Gifts of food are fine provided they are not fattening, or are given by special arrangement ("Please please make me some of your chocolate chip cookies"), or presented in moderation. If you know the person has a sentimental streak, then get them a special Christmas tree ornament. (This is NOT the same as the plastic statuette because a Christmas tree ornament is beautiful, sentimental, and you only have to look at it one month of the year.) 5. Don't take it personally if the object of your interest doesn't have a lot of free time just now. If they say, "I'll have a lot more time after Christmas," by all means give them a call on the 26th. *********************** SHARE WITH A FRIEND-- PLEASE FORWARD THIS ISSUE ! ---------------------------------------------- If you haven't already done so, please forward this issue to your single friends and associates. If the thought of all the responsibility (and maybe expense) gives you panic, do it the easy way: round up as many of your same-sex friends as possible, and have each of them invite at least two of their opposite sex friends as well. Then make the whole thing pot luck and BYOB and there you are -- your only responsibility is to have enough paper plates, cups, napkins, and plastic utensils on hand. If you have doubts that conversation will flow smoothly, plan a game -- team Trivial Pursuit, or Pictionary work fine. ************************* Web Site of the Week It's tempting to think that it is somehow "wrong" to break up with someone "just before the holidays." WRONG! You think it's better to find out on January 2 that all of that apparent holiday bliss was really a lie? No, no, no! If it's over, NOW's the time to get the job done. For sympathy and good advice, see www.breakupgirl.com/advice, especially the archive section. ******************** ALL SINGLES DANCE SCHEDULE: November 24 Mountain Shadows, 5641 E.
