The standard advice -- to get out and do things for others -- works great, but sometimes we haven't got the energy for even that. If you're too blue to bustle, try the following exercise: 1. Make a list of everything you have to be cranky about. (This should be easy.) 2. Make a list of everything you have to be thankful for. (Be honest. Start with the basics: Breathing. Have use of most body parts. Roof over head. Etc.) 3. List "Ten things I'm pretty good at." (Not that you're necessarily Number One -- just "pretty good" will do, e.g. shopping, being creative with leftovers, reading...... .) 4. Ten things I wanted to do as a young person and have actually done. (Or as many as you can think of.) 5. Ten things I always wanted to do that I haven't done yet. 6. Wild and crazy ways I might actually accomplish each of the ten things. (You aren't done with this assignment until you have SOMETHING down for each one, no matter how impractical. Goofy is good. You may, however, stop to think about it and return to that part of the assignment.) 7. Make three New Year's resolutions. Lay out a specific plan to accomplish each. You won't necessarily turn from blue to gold by doing this assignment, but your blue will be brighter. The New Year is coming, full of possibilities. So for right now, don't think of it as being down; think of it as resting up! ------------------------------------------------- ADVICE FROM AUNT JANET: Last minute gifts for single friends. 1. Anything you baked/made/decorated yourself -- food, photos, sculpture. Include a note about why you made it for them or want them to have it. 2. Anything of yours that they have admired and that, now that you think about it, you would enjoy them having it more than you having it. 3. Promises that you will keep: Been meaning to get together once a month for brunch, or coffee, or tennis, but never get it done? Buy a little appointment book, flag a Post-it on your suggested dates for the whole year with a note asking them to confirm which dates they'd like to schedule for your get-togethers. ----------------------------------------------------- SHARE WITH A FRIEND-- PLEASE FORWARD THIS ISSUE ! ---------------------------------------------- If you haven't already done so, please forward this issue to your single friends and associates.
