Jacobsen So you're laboring over your personal ad, and you wish there was someone to give you advice on what to say. There is! First, make a draft of your ad. Fine tune it as best you can. Read ads currently running by same sex people, so you'll see what the competition is saying, and so you can avoid cliches that are obviously being overworked. Once you have the ad "ready to go," ask an opposite sex friend to read it for you. A coworker is all right if they know you fairly well. The key is that it be an opposite sex person who knows you and who you can trust to be honest with you. An opposite sex friend will have an idea of the kind of person you would like the ad to attract, and can advise you on whether your ad is worded the right way to do that. One fellow's real love is "homespun librarian" types, but he thought he had to mention in his ad that he drives a BMW. Nope, said his women friends, drop the BMW, mention your teddy bear collection instead. Opposite sex friends can also help you avoid terms that tend to be misunderstood between the sexes. A woman was checking an ad for a friend and asked him (you need someone who will be frank with you, remember) why he had said he was "sensitive" in his ad. He said, "Well, I get my feelings hurt." But women generally use the term to mean "tuned in to other people's feelings," and while this was a nice guy, calling himself "sensitive" was going to attract women who expected more of him than he was likely to give. The more opposite sex friends who will critique your ad, the better. Then consider the suggestions that come up most frequently and prepare the final draft of your ad yourself. Advice is good, but it is your ad. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Singles Site of the Week - Happy Father's Day!
