Jacobsen Leaving greetings and messages via voice mail is almost - but not quite - the same as talking one-to-one. To make the most out of meeting people through the personals, keep the subtle differences in mind. (These tips apply to leaving a message on an answering machine, as well.) 1. Speak clearly. There are two reasons to enunciate just a little more clearly by phone. First, in talking face to face your body language helps the person understand what you're saying. Second, the telephone doesn't "hear" quite the range of sound that your ear can hear, so subtleties can be lost. But there's no need to over-articulate either. Just avoid lazy lips, and speak clearly. 2. Keep the tempo. Speaking clearly doesn't mean dragging it out. Just use a normal pace. Talk as you would if the person were right there with you, because you ARE talking directly to them, just with some time delay. 3. USE body language. Answering service companies teach employees to smile when they talk on the phone. Smiling perks up your voice so you come across as friendly and natural. Another way to put energy in your message is to STAND while you're talking. Pace around, gesture; more of your personality will sparkle through in your message. 4. Repeat the key stuff! When replying to an ad, people's most common error is in leaving a phone number that's difficult to understand. So the phone number is the one place you should slow down. Speak each number clearly. The best way to be sure they got the number is to give it twice - early in your message and again at the end. That way you'll be sure you left the number (some people forget!). And the same goes for giving your name ("first names only" is best when using the personals). Even simple names can be misunderstood because so many sound alike: Ron? Don? Lisa? Teresa? Repeat it; wouldn't hurt to spell it. You want the person you're calling to feel confident and comfortable about returning your call; be sure they have the information they need to get back to you. ************************ Singles Site of the Week - Interested in what other people think? You can catch up on the latest in public opinion at www.gallup.com. The pollsters' web site includes survey results from politics to lifestyles. Or a combination of the two, such as "Who's more likely to own an SUV-- a Republican a Democrat, or an Independent?" (Republicans are most likely, Democrats least likely to drive an SUV.) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ALL SINGLES DANCE SCHEDULE: July 14 Mountain Shadows, 5641 E.
