There'd better be something. by Janet L. Jacobsen Nice is nice, but nice is not enough. As one woman noted, the reason the "nice" guy seldom gets the girl in the movies is the "nice" guys are usually soooo b-o-r-i-n-g. (Women, of course, can be just as boring.) Whether you're placing a personal, answering an ad or meeting new people out and about, to get most people interested, you have to be interesting - which is not as difficult as it might sound. It's all in how you'd answer the question "What have you been up to?" Make a list of the five most exciting or interesting things that have happened to you in the last few months. If the list is mostly tv or movies you've seen, you're in clear-cut danger of a place on the "Roster of the Boring." Would an interesting person be interested in the items on your list? It's having new and interesting things to do in your life that keeps you from being bored, and if you're bored, you can't help but be boring. And hardly anyone is willing to settle for a boring partner. What have you read lately? And one more murder mystery doesn't count. You have to try new things, read new things, really listen to new ideas. Sure, this means you've got to take some risk, but starting small is ok. Just start. Sometimes we overlook the special interests we already have because we think they won't be important to others, but those things are part of what makes you special. You create a lot of your own baked goods, or recently rebuilt a car for your teenager, or biked a hundred miles last weekend - speak up! What you do with your time is important to who you are, after all. A big part of meeting and dating is the search for common interests - or uncommon interests that you'd like to hear more about. So it's not enough to have interests - you also have to be willing to talk about them (and ask the other person about theirs!). ************************ Singles Site of the Week - When you want information on a topic, you can surf the Web, of course, but it's probably faster to get right down to business by looking it up in an encyclopedia -- which you can do on-line! Editor & Publisher (a trade magazine for people in the newspaper business, who always need to know things) recommends the Encyclopedia Brittanica, with 72,000 articles. They' re at www.britannica.com. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ALL SINGLES DANCE SCHEDULE: July 28 Mountain Shadows, 5641 E. Lincoln Dr., Paradise Valley August 4 Camelback Inn, 5402 E.
