Jacobsen Many women, especially those who are newly single, find the dance scene a trying experience. Yet dancing is one of the most socially acceptable forms of meeting people. How to solve the dilemma? Following are several tips to improve your "nightlife" skills (and many are effective for guys too!): 1. Men are not nearly as brave as we've been led to believe. Sitting with a group of women drastically reduces the number of men who would be willing to approach the "fortress" to ask you to dance. If you must be with a friend, make it just one. 2. Better still, if it's at all possible, don't sit down -- or at least don't take permanent root in one spot. A man feels safer approaching a women who's standing -- it's not so obvious if you reject him. 3. If you are going to sit, you will need to be early enough to get a "good" seat -- one as close to the biggest crowd of men as possible. This means a seat that's highly visible, not hard to get to, and usually somewhere between the bar and dance floor. 4. A purse and a good coat tie you to a spot and give you something to "worry" about. Don't bring your best coat, and wear something with pockets if you can, to carry your car keys and money. If you must have a purse, make it an old one you don't care about, and again, only necessities like car keys and money. Lock your good purse with the rest of your things in the trunk of your car. 5. When you refuse to make eye contact with a man you're interested in, you probably think you're being feminine. He probably thinks you want to avoid him. The briefest eye contact and a slight smile or nod of greeting will ease his fear of rejection. 6. Sometimes men and women have different time-tables for an event, such as the women tend to come early and leave early and the majority of men don't arrive until late. Find out the pattern and be there when the men are; if necessary, take a nap before you go. 7. Walk around a bit. Stand for a minute near a man you'reinterested in. Make it easy for him to ask you to dance. 8. Or ask him yourself. You won't get nearly as many "no's" as the average guy -- most men can expect to be turned down 75% of the time when they ask a woman to dance at a nightclub. Rejections are generally much fewer at a singles event. If he does say no? Smile, say "Thank you anyway" and move on. There are other fish in the sea, and you're there to meet them. ------------------------------- Get timely tips on how to handle the mysteries of dating by signing up for our NEW dating e-newsletter. Save yourself from unwanted e-mails, both the commercial kind, and from folks you're not really interested in. Have two e-mail accounts. One should be a free account such as hotmail or yahoo. Use this one for ALL web-surfing you do and any commercial site that needs your web address. And give this e-mail address to people you've just met and/or don't know well. Check this address one or twice a week. Save your "good" e-mail address (which you check daily or thereabouts) for close family and friends only. Beware of having your work address as your "close friends" address. Since many companies reserve the right to monitor e-mails in their system, such correspondence is not really private. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< SHARE WITH A FRIEND-- PLEASE FORWARD THIS ISSUE ! ------------------------------------- If you haven't already done so, please forward this issue to your single friends and associates.
