According to an October Wall Street Journal article, these days there's a decline in long-distance love. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that 2.73 million Americans were married couples living apart, mostly in "long-distance" relationships, facilitated by the ease and relative low-cost of air travel. Since September 11, however, several factors have lowered the appeal of living apart from a loved one - not just safety fears, but travel disruptions, fewer flights, and airport delays. While some couples are moving back together, for others current conditions have ended the relationship. The article cited one engaged couple who split because she had safety concerns and didn't want to move her children to his Washington, D.C. home. And for some singles, long-distance dating looks less appealing; it's good to have someone nearby in emergencies. Left ear for "sweet nothings." A recent study at Sam Houston State University found that subjects had a 64% recall of emotional words whispered in their left ear, compared to 58% for the right, reports the Reader's Digest. It may be that the brain's right side, which processes emotions better, is more sensitive to the left ear. How to keep love alive. A Scripts Howard News Service story offered these tips for keeping love alive and well: Always wish each other the best. Remember you're in love-kiss, cuddle, hold hands. Never speak ill of their family or friends. Listen to each other. Never embarrass or correct one another, especially in public. Don't yell; whisper when you argue. "On the days when you don't like each other, remember you love each other." How much time do you 'invest' choosing a sweetheart? Studies show that Americans spend an average of 85 hours gathering information before buying a car, 33 hours for furniture, 32 hours on computers or home office equipment, and 23 hours on major appliances. One area where sight gets clearer as we age. A recent Gallup poll found that 52% of American adults believe in "love at first sight," but there are definite age differences in that view. Among those age 18 to 29, 60% believe in instant love, compared to 56% of those age 30 to 49. By the time one reaches age 50 and older, only 43% still think "love at first sight" is possible. Get more rest! According to the Sleep Disorders Center of Oklahoma City, getting an average half to one hour of sleep more per night will improve your appearance, alertness and mood. Quotable. "It's a shallow life that doesn't give a person a few scars." Garrison Keillor * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ADVICE FROM AUNT JANET: Various Valentine approaches! Valentine's Day can be a dilemma for singles, depending on where you are in your dating relationships. Here are some selected strategies: **Newly single? Just starting to get out to meet people? Arm yourself with a pocketful of kids' classroom valentines, signed with your first name and phone number. Give them out at singles events around Valentine's Day. **Send e-cards to single friends. With the right choice of card, this can show you are thinking of the person, without being overly "romantic." **Someone you're interested in, but the relationship isn't far enough along for a big "Valentine" date? Send a hand-written note (snail-mail, so it needs to be sent before V-Day); say you are enjoying getting to know them and send them "best wishes" for Valentine's Day. If they are interested, it 's thoughtful. If they aren't interested, it's not overly pushy. ------------------------------------------------- SHARE WITH A FRIEND-- PLEASE FORWARD THIS ISSUE ! ---------------------------------------------- If you haven't already done so, please forward this issue to your single friends and associates.
